HOW TO LOWER YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE NATURALLY

Part 12 : Lower your Blood Pressure with Tea

Regularly drinking tea makes an important contribution to your consumption of anti-oxidant flavonoids, which help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and can help lower your blood pressure.

Green tea is better than regular black tea as it has less caffeine and seems to offer higher cardiovascular protection (and if you have more than ten cups a day it also offers some protection against cancer due to the EGCG it contains).

A study in Japan over a 12 year period, showed that those who drank 5 to 6 cups of green tea a day cut their risk of dying from cardiovascular disease by over 40%.

But drinking regular black tea is good too, if you're not keen on green tea. One study in The Netherlands showed that drinking 3 cups a day of black tea could cut your risk of heart disease by 30%.

Drinking tea (either green or black) helps make the blood less sticky and has a beneficial effect on blood lipids and blood pressure, decreasing the risk of coronary heart disease and stroke. If you have high blood pressure, consider drinking four or five cups a day. Alternatively investigate and check with your doctor whether it is worth you taking green tea extracts.

It is best to drink tea between meals and not with them as the tannins in the tea reduce absorption of iron and other vitamins and minerals from your food. Also drink your tea without milk as milk binds with the antioxidants and makes them less easy to absorb.

Tea contains much less caffeine than coffee, but if you prefer to avoid caffeine choose from the decaffeinated tea which is available these days or choose Redbush tea (rooibos tea) from South African which is naturally free of caffeine.

Maybe the British habit of stopping for tea every afternoon is a good idea for your blood pressure even if the cakes and pastries which go with it are not!
