Part 30 : Putting it all together

We have looked at so many ways of lowering your blood pressure without conventional medicine over the course of this series that you may be wondering how to start!

Almost certainly you can't do it all at once but if you want to make some lifestyle changes to reduce your blood pressure you do have to start somewhere.

Undoubtedly there are changes we have talked about which appeal more than others, so you may want to start there.

On the other hand, there are a few areas which will give you huge benefits very quickly – that is certainly the case for stopping smoking and getting going with exercise so it makes sense to start here if the changes which appeal are the ones which are less likely to have a major impact in reducing your hypertension.

Diet and losing weight belong with the major impact category too - changing to a healthier diet and including some of the foods which help lower blood pressure will give you huge benefits.  However in this area you may find you want to introduce changes more gradually - suddenly eating a lot more fibre or fruit and vegetables can upset your stomach and introducing a lot of other foods you are not used to may cause you to go running for cover.

The sudden switch to a new weight loss diet so often leads to diet failure that a whole 95% of the population may as well not begin! However you do have an added motivation with your high blood pressure so you may just belong in the 5% who succeed!

If you don't feel a complete change in diet overnight is for you then just start by adding one or two of the foods we talked about for helping your blood pressure and start eating a couple of additional portions of fruit and vegetables a day. Cut down your portion sizes a little too.

Once you have got used to those changes and they have become a habit, make more changes. Work your way towards a healthier diet bit by bit and it is more likely to stick.

So pick out the areas where you would like to start and the changes you want to make and then take the most important first step which is to talk to your doctor about what you want to do.

Although your doctor may not be up-to-date on every facet of lowering your blood pressure naturally – after all doctors would have to spend all their time reading to keep up with every study in all the thousands of illnesses their patients might suffer – he or she should be able to take into account your current state of health and the medicines you are taking and make sure that your plan is Ok for you. Be sure and make that appointment.
