HOW TO LOWER YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE NATURALLY

Part 26 : Alternative Therapies for High Blood Pressure

There has been a growing acceptance of alternative (or complementary) therapies in the West over the past few decades.

Some people favour them over traditional medicine because they are generally less invasive, have fewer side effects and they take a holistic, whole person view rather than concentrating only on the symptoms of a disease.

As well as keeping free from disease, health is as much about balance and keeping the mind, body and spirit working in harmony and these therapies aim to do just that.

But how effective are they in the treatment of high blood pressure?

Many people have found relief for hypertension through effective alternative therapies although in most cases they are best used to complement other forms of treatment such as taking conventional medicine or making lifestyle changes. There's no point in taking a few aromatherapy sessions and expecting your blood pressure to magically reduce when you are continuing to smoke, eat poorly and take no exercise!

If you decide to look for a suitable course of alternative therapy be sure and investigate it thoroughly because there are quite a few to choose from and new ones tend to spring up overnight claiming everything under the sun.  Also, just because these treatments tend to be natural does not mean that they are necessarily harmless. After all there are many poisonous substances occurring in the plant world.

Find out all you can about the particular therapies you are interested in and get impartial advice from places which have no self-interest in promoting the therapy. Consider the estimated costs and the likely results and how long it might take to see any benefit. Be sure and check with your own doctor too about the advisability of using various alternative therapies in your particular circumstances.

When selecting an alternative therapy practitioner try and go by recommendation and always check qualifications and/or references and whether they have a licence to practise if that is a requirement in your area. Ask about their experience in dealing with patients with high blood pressure. Then make sure you feel comfortable with the therapist on a personal level and that you are happy to trust (at least part of) your health care with them.

The following therapies are among those which seem to have some beneficial effect in lowering high blood pressure : aromatherapy, herbal medicine, ayurvedic medicine, naturopathy and hypnotherapy. We will look at these in a bit more detail in future parts of this series.
